The “Money Comes” general store was built in 1952 in an old, traditional tiled bungalow. In the early days, it served as a concession shop for people who worked in the Taiyen salt fields; the store provided them with daily necessities and a recreational center. But with the end of salt production at the Beimen Salt Field, the concession shop also officially came to an end.
In 2003, architect Lin Ya-yin, who had lived in France, led a group of middle-aged and elderly unemployed members of diversified employment program to start a renovation project here. Together, they transformed decay into magic; they brought a whole new meaning to the Money Comes general store. Transformed from an unused space, it now features local characteristics, with walls made of local discarded tiles, oyster shells, and other seashells. The front of the building is also decorated with a traditional gold ingot (yuanbao), symbolizing prosperity and wealth for the business; it calls for money to never stop rolling in.
The classic T-drama The Prince Who Turns into a Frog was filmed here in 2005; the Money Comes general store was set up as the home of the female lead. After the show aired, many tourists came to take pictures of the set. Nowadays, Money Comes general store sells a wide variety of children's toys and snacks, evoking the childhood memories of countless tourists.
